Founded in 1842 by Samuel R. Mott, in Bouckville, New York, the first Mott's products were apple cider and vinegar. The genius that is Mott's Clamato tomato-clam cocktail didn't emerge until much later. The Duffy-Mott Company was incorporated in 1914, following a merger with the W.B. Duffy Cider Company. Years later, on March 29, 1982 it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Cadbury Schweppes plc.

A Canadian creation, the Caesar or Bloody Caesar was invented to celebrate the opening of Marco's Italian restaurant at the Calgary Inn in 1969. Resident mixologist Walter Chell was commissioned to develop this new cocktail. Inspired by the flavours of Spaghetti Vongole (spaghetti with clams), Chell combined sweet (tomato juice), salty (clam nectar), sour (lime), spicy (Worcestershire sauce) and bitter (celery salt) in his new concoction. After naming the drink for the Roman emperor, legend has it that Chell served one to an Englishman who exclaimed, "That's a good bloody Caesar!"

The Duffy Mott Company knew a good thing when they tasted it. They introduced this fabulous clam and tomato concoction as Mott's Clamato in 1969. Today Mott's Clamato the essential Caesar mix and can be found on store shelves across Canada. Bloody Caesars are the most popular cocktail in the country, with more than 250 million served every year.
